Josette rode fast, looked for the signs that the royal family was unintentionally leaving behind. She found them and instantly cursed herself for her lack of foresight.

If there were two, there were bound to be a dozen.

And six more surrounded Cordelia and Gia and Kielan.

Nicholas was long gone. The soldiers probably decided that he was not worthy of their energy and let him go. If he was fast enough, he might escape danger altogether.

At least one of them would.

Eros went stock still beneath her as she held her breath. Josette would surely tell Evander what a good horse she was, what an excellent, true horse she was, if she ever saw him alive again.

Out of the corner of her eye, a shadow twitched and then pulled back. Josette turned back to the situation at hand, with the Queen Mother and Cordelia surrounded by heavily armed men.

Forget them. They are as good as dead. Get the child. If you have the child you might run for the border and you and he will live to see the day. He will rule in their stead.

But Josette could not accept that. That was defeat and that was unacceptable.

And she did not want to look in that child’s eyes and know that she had given up before trying.

Again, there was a shadow, and it moved unnaturally.

In fact, it moved toward Josette.

She tugged Eros back, into the shadows, but she kept her eyes on Gia and Cordelia, even as the shadow approached and she pulled her sword.

“Where were you when the night fell?” The shadow whispered.

“I was with the terror of the night, tearing it apart,” Josette replied.

The hood fell back and a woman who looked vaguely familiar nodded at her. “I am Issat.”

“Josette,” she whispered.

“We’ve been waiting for you to catch up,” Issat said.

“We?”

Issat nodded at the tree branches above Cordelia and Gia and the contingent of guards. Then she tilted her head to the shadows that swayed in the breeze.

“Have you been following us?”

“Let us kill these men first and we will speak afterwards.”

It seemed like a fair enough plan as one man reached for Kielan in Cordelia’s arms and she wrenched away from him and screamed loud enough to startle Josette.

A bolt flew from high up in the trees and drove itself deep into the man’s back.

Havoc reigned.

Issat and Josette threw themselves into the fight, tearing into the men. Josette saw Issat push one man into the gently swaying shadows and when he stumbled back into the moonlight, his throat was slit so deeply that he was nearly decapitated. Eros even helped, snapping and kicking at men that came to close to her.

When all was said and done, Josette and Issat stood back to back, breathing heavily.

Around them were the remains of the guards.

Josette turned to Cordelia and Gia who were staring at her with wide eyes. They were blood splattered and Kielan was crying against Cordelia’s neck.

“Please don’t leave us again,” Cordelia whispered.

Josette swallowed hard and nodded. Her heart was beating wildly and she feared she might be ill over the dead men at her feet.
